Falls Creek snow ski

Winter is coming and it is time for skiing.

There are some options in Victoria to ski in winter:  Lake Mountain, Mt Buller, Falls Creek, and Mt Baw Baw.

It is said Mt Buller is filed by touring groups and I have never been there.  I once drove to Mt Bawbaw, but there are too many sharp turnings on the way and the swerves made me sick, so I swore I would never go there.  I have been to Lake Mountain lots of time; this is a good place for people to play with snow, which I mean enjoying snow view, skiing on toboggan.  There are some ski channels in Lake Mountain and not many people skied there, mostly for amateurs.  But you need to rent at least snow shoes to be permitted to access there.  Lake Mountain is not far away from eastern Melbourne to Lake Mountain, only about 2 hours driving, so it is comfortable for one day return.  There used to be familiar lesson packages including entry fee and lunch and I like that.

Falls creek is a place for professional skiers and real learners.  But it is 4-5 hours’ driving from Melbourne, so I would like to spend several days there to compensate for my effort in driving.  I have booked a cottage off mountain months ago. Off mountain accommodations are usually cheaper than on mountain rooms.

Snow gears, such as snow clothes, trousers, gloves, hats, goggles, are prepared in advance.  For beginners, ski, boots, poles can be hired instead of purchase.

There is entrance fee and full fare for a car is $49.5 on arrival, but if you book online, you can save $4.5 for one day.  If you arrive after 1PM, the price will be $22, after 4PM entry is free.

Snow pass card is a one-off cost which is $5, so what is it for?

“Your snow pass is a re-usable credit card-sized ticket that you keep on you whilst you are skiing or snowboarding. There's no need to take your Snow Pass out to ride the lifts - Electronic gates scan your Snow Pass as you pass through and automatically open to allow access to the lift.”

This can be purchased online or on arrival at:  On-mountain Ticket Offices are located in Slalom Plaza (at the base of the Falls Express Chairlift), in the Village Bowl (at the top of Gully Chair) and at all Falls Creek Sports outlets.

Lift pass is quite expensive and I saw many foreigners accused Australia’s excessive price for skiing due to this!  But anyway, there is way to reduce the cost a little bit; it is said in falls creek’s official website:

“Purchase 14+ days in advance for 15% discount off full price, purchase 1 - 13 days in advance for 5% discount off full price.”

Be aware, the 15% discount is NOT applied to Children, so there is no need to book in advance.

In addition,” if you purchase lift tickets, group lessons, or Children's Programs for 5 days or greater and you get the advantage of 2 rest days that you can use at any time. This means that if you purchase a 5 day pass you can use it for 5 days over a 7 day period. Lift Passes for 5 days or greater also include free access from 1pm the day prior to the ticket commencing.”

Snow lesson packages are more economical for ski learners.  For children age 3 to 5:

For children age 6 to 14:

Be aware, the snow pass is not included, but you don’t need to buy extra lift pass. You can order half a day, the afternoon session does not include lunch.

The most calm and poised kangaroo I have ever seen

I have viewed many kangaroos in Australia, but have never seen such a kangaroo, it was having late lunch, eating grass on the ground, lots of kids went over to photo with it, patting on its head or body, but it just ignore them and remained a composed and self-assured manner.

One day in Mt macedon

There is a famous Chinese poem:

停车坐爱枫林晚,霜叶红于二月花

Stopping in my sedan chair in the evening, I sit admiring the maple grove;
The frost-covered leaves are redder than the flowers of spring.

Canberra in Australia

Canberra is the capital city of Australia, although it is not so famous as Sydney and Melbourne, we still want to go there for its political symbol just as Beijing in China.

4 days in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia

We went to Malaysia on our way back from Shanghai to Melbourne at the end of September in 2013.

Day one:

1. Transit Visa. In AirAsia airport, transit visa place was just inside the customs hall, opposite to the customs checkin gate, and beside the window next to the Islamic Bank (islam bank), there is outstanding words "120 hours transit visa", it is easy to find. Presenting the next trip air ticket, passport and immigration sheet to Malaysian immigration officer. Then the visa officer will give you a form (that is the main content of the passport and flight number, etc.). The white card in front of a column should fill the purpose of entry "transit"! After handing in the form, we wait for about 15 mins then the officer returned the passports to us with visa in them.

6 days in Beijing: before you go.

We spent our holiday in Beijing on September last year, some tips for preparation:

Wanaka

After Milford Sound, I wanted to go back to Queenstown due to earthquake around glacier area.

Wanaka is a place for me to take a break after the Mount Cook during the journey.

We accommodated here:

Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park  NZD 36

Two unforgettable things:

      1.   There is toasted lamb in the big shopping centre in Wanaka;
      2.  The scene on the way from Wanaka to Queenstown, there is a sharp climbing mountain road , which is quite scary from a far distance looking, it zigzag upwards the mountain like a snake!

Milford Sound

Before departing Te Anau, be aware to fulfil your oil tank, I need to emphasize this point again. There is no petrol station on the way and in Milford Sound, and you even cannot call for help because there is weak or no wireless signals on the way…I was almost stranded on the road on my way back.

Another tip is:

make sure you do your supermarket shop before you arrive in Milford Sound as there are no grocery supplies available in Milford.

Route: Te Anauà Milford Sound 118 km – about 1 hour 43 mins.

Te Anau

It takes too much driving if I go from Queenstown to Milford sound, so Te Anau is a stop to take a overnight break, it is the perfect town to base yourself from to visit Milford Sound.

arrow town, Queenstown

It takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes’ driving from Mt Cook to Queenstown. On the way we visited Arrow Town.

Arrowtown is a delightful gold rush village nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River. You’ll be enchanted by Historic Arrowtown, a New Zealand treasure. We spent around 2 hours or so walking around the historic open museum retrospection how difficult it was for our Chinese ancestors to come and survive in this place. It has also a quaint Main Street and lovely old cottages. The trees lining the road date back to the late 1670's.  This is really a lovely experience.

In Queenstown, we camped our little van here:

Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park

This is quite convenient place and 10 minutes’ walk distance to the centre of the city centre.  Queenstown is rather crowded with people due to its fame and popularity.

I missed the toasted lamb leg in the shopping centre of the city, I cannot find the same wonderful cooked food in the supermarkets of Victoira.  There is also a sort of big hamburger to sold near the beach site, it is easy to be identified—lots of people lined up all days..

Mount Cook

Route: Lake Tekapoà Mt cook   101 km – about 1 hour 26 mins
We camped here with a non-powered site:
Glentanner Park Centre
Mount Cook is really a fairy land in the earth.  I don’t want to say more with my barren language.  I f I could I would spend half of my journey time here. There is a hooker valley for walk track, the full Hooker Valley walk takes 4 hours return. Starting at the Visitor Centre or White Horse Hill campground/carpark (at the end of Hooker Valley Rd off State Highway 80). The track leads up the Hooker Valley, along the Hooker River and ends at the glacier lake, where there are amazing views of Aoraki/Mount Cook on a clear day.  The Hooker Valley track is mostly flat and well-formed but some sections are rocky or muddy, and there are three or four swing bridges to cross.
On your way to Glacier Lake in the hooker valley, be aware of wooden shed,  a lot of people carved their names all over the interior walls,  there are people from Japan, UK, US, China… I would not recommend you to do the sameJ

Christchurch

It is about 2AM in the morning when we arrived Christchurch; we rested ourselves in the waiting area in the airport until 6 or 7 in the morning. Then I found a private shuttle bus, after minutes bargaining, we reached an agreement 40 or 45 NZ dollars for 3 people ( I cannot remember clearly. ), I was so happy then because AU dollars were at a very high level at that time.

Monday 22 February 2016

Lake Tekapo

I obtained my camper van around 6 PM which is very later for me.

Route: Christchurch-àLake Tekapo  243 km, 3 hours 13 mins in the Mackenzie Basin.

So you can imagine it was very dark when I arrived the holiday park. This is the place I settled the van:
